The 15-member Bundeswehr team had initially planned to stay in Greenland for at least two days, with the option to extend their visit. However, the deployment ended in just 44 hours, with the soldiers set to depart from the capital Nuuk around midday, according to the report.
Germany’s military confirmed that the operation concluded “as planned.” A spokesperson for the Bundeswehr’s Operational Command stated in an emailed message that the team could not inspect one of its planned stations due to poor weather conditions but described the mission as successful.
“Significant insights were obtained,” the spokesperson mentioned, adding that these findings would assist Germany and its allies in coordinating potential joint actions under the NATO framework to bolster security throughout the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.
The brief deployment occurs amidst heightened strategic interest in the Arctic, where NATO nations have been ramping up surveillance and coordination efforts in light of increasing geopolitical tensions in the area.
