“The influence of SA20 is evident in international cricket for South Africa…100% there is no doubt. Since the inception of the SA20, it has allowed our local players to gain exposure alongside international players and varied match situations,” Boucher shared during a media interaction organized by SA20.
“We witnessed the transformations in the IPL. As young players began competing with international players and absorbing their knowledge in the IPL, their skills soared, leading to an immense depth in Indian cricket.” Boucher cited young all-rounder Corbin Bosch as a prime example to illustrate his point.
“While it may not match the IPL’s prestige, SA20 is still exceptionally strong. It has provided exposure on a global scale, benefiting our cricketers not only in T20 formats but also in one-day and Test matches. Consider Corbin Bosch. He had an impressive SA20 season, and shortly after, he was competing in one-day cricket, followed by an opportunity in Test cricket. Thus, SA20 is unquestionably a game-changer that was necessary for cricket in our country,” he added.
However, the 49-year-old recognizes that SA20 still has considerable progress to make to rival the IPL and Big Bash League regarding market presence and talent scouting.
“International players hold SA20 in high regard, and many have participated in both the BBL and the IPL. Naturally, as I mentioned before, the IPL will always be the IPL, and I don’t believe there’s any rivalry there.
“The Big Bash has been established for a long time. It has experienced fluctuations but seems to be returning to a solid standard, and now that SA20 has taken off well, it is also improving. I believe those three tournaments are currently the top three, and this isn’t just my biased opinion.” Boucher also noted that the feedback from international players participating in SA20 has been very positive.
“This comes after conversations with international players involved in these competitions globally. Much of the credit goes to the IPL investors, Graeme (Smith), and his team. They are receptive to learning every season, which gives me confidence that SA20 will continue to grow and hopefully secure the second spot behind the IPL,” he concluded.
