What has driven South Africa's rapid ascent in world cricket across all formats?
Former South African cricketer Mark Boucher has praised the SA20 for its significant role in revitalizing the Proteas’ international cricket success recently. He believes that the exposure their young players have gained in various match situations has positively influenced their performance against tougher opponents lately.

South Africa is currently enjoying a successful streak across all formats, having reached the finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 and subsequently clinching the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2025.

“The impact of SA20 is evident in international cricket for South Africa…100% there is no doubt. Since the inception of the SA20, it has provided our local players with invaluable experience alongside international players and in different match conditions,” Boucher stated during a media interaction organized by SA20.
“We witnessed the same effect in the IPL. As soon as young players began competing with international stars in the IPL, their skills improved dramatically, and now Indian cricket boasts impressive depth.” Boucher highlighted young all-rounder Corbin Bosch as a case in point to underscore his argument.
“While it’s not at the IPL level, SA20 is still incredibly valuable. It has opened doors to the global landscape and has benefitted our cricketers not just in T20 but also in one-day and Test formats. Take Corbin Bosch, for example. He had a remarkable stint in SA20, and soon after, he transitioned to one-day cricket and then to Test cricket. So yes, SA20 is undeniably a game changer that our country desperately needs,” he remarked.

However, the 49-year-old acknowledges that the SA20 has a long way to go to reach the market presence and talent development levels of the IPL and the Big Bash League.

“International players hold SA20 in high regard, and many have played in the BBL and IPL. As I’ve mentioned, the IPL will always set the standard, and I don’t believe there is any real competition for it.

“The Big Bash has been established for quite some time. It has experienced its highs and lows, but it seems to be returning to form, and SA20 has made a strong start, continually improving. I would say that currently, those three tournaments are at the top, and that’s not just my personal bias.” Boucher noted that feedback from international players participating in SA20 has been very positive.

“It’s based on conversations with international players involved in various competitions worldwide. Largely, this is thanks to the IPL investors, Graeme (Smith), and his team. They remain committed to learning each season. This is why I believe SA20 will grow and evolve, hopefully becoming a strong competitor to the IPL,” he added.
