Himachal's Fish Output Expected to Hit 19,000 Metric Tonnes by FY26, Says Chief Minister
Celebrating the achievements of the Mukhya Mantri Carp Matsya Palan Yojana, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Sunday that the state’s total fish production has increased from 17,000 metric tonnes in 2022-23 to an estimated 19,000 metric tonnes in the current fiscal year.

“For many years, Himachal Pradesh has been recognized as the ’fruit bowl’ of India, but today, it is forging a new path toward becoming a center of blue prosperity,” the chief minister stated.

“When our government assumed office three years ago, we realized that our rural youth were searching for more than traditional job opportunities; they were in pursuit of dignity, innovation, and ’self-reliance’ within their villages.” This motivated a comprehensive reform of the fisheries sector, transitioning from outdated policies to a more dynamic, incentive-driven model, he mentioned.

“Under MMCMPY (Mukhya Mantri Carp Matsya Palan Yojana) for 2024-25, the state government didn’t merely introduce a scheme; it implemented measures to revolutionize the rural economy.

“The outcomes of this systemic change are already reflected in the statistics. More significantly, the growth in state reservoirs like Gobind Sagar, Pong Dam, and Kol Dam is evidence that effective management and community engagement are collaborating to generate employment opportunities for local residents,” Sukhu remarked.

The initiative is presently being executed in eight districts of the state, including Bilaspur, Mandi, Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, Sirmaur, and Chamba, covering a vast geographical area and promoting balanced regional development in the fisheries sector, he added.

The chief minister also highlighted that the state government is setting up advanced Brood Banks. With an investment of Rs. 10 crore, a Carp Brood Bank is being established in Nalagarh, along with a Trout Brood Bank in Patlikuhal.

“These facilities will guarantee that our farmers gain access to high-quality seeds, putting an end to the previous dependence on external sources and promoting the sustainability of our aquaculture initiatives,” he continued.

“Through MMCMPY, we are not merely breeding fish; we are nurturing hope, self-employment, and a resilient future for over 20,000 families. This embodies Vyavastha Parivartan, altering the system to transform lives.”
