Retail investors have been reducing their stakes in HDFC Bank, even as mutual funds, foreign portfolio investors, and high-net-worth individuals increase theirs. The sentiment is further dampened by a high loan-to-deposit ratio and falling stock prices.

Retail investors, holding roughly 7.5% of Indian equities, have gradually cut back on their investments in HDFC Bank. By December 2025, their share decreased to 9.41%, marking the lowest point in the past 20 quarters, based on historical shareholding data from stock exchanges.
