Financial disclosures accompanying nomination papers indicate a remarkable growth in assets among leaders from key political parties, compared to their declarations during the 2017 civic elections, according to news agency PTI.
Former mayor and Shiv Sena leaders
Kishori Pednekar, former Mumbai mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate from Lower Parel (ward 199), has reported total assets of ₹5.26 crore, representing a 226% increase from ₹1.61 crore in 2017.
Her affidavit details immovable assets valued at ₹4.69 crore and movable assets of ₹57 lakh. Pednekar held the position of mayor from 2019 to 2022.
Samadhan Sarvankar of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), seeking a second term, has declared assets totaling ₹46.59 crore, marking a staggering increase of approximately 394% from ₹9.43 crore in 2017, as reported by PTI.
His affidavit indicates immovable assets of ₹40.59 crore, with his occupation listed as businessman.
Family-linked candidates and repeat contestants
Yamini Jadhav, a former MLA running from Mazagaon (ward 209), has declared her assets at ₹14.57 crore, including immovable properties worth ₹11.28 crore.
In the Maharashtra Assembly elections of 2024, she had reported assets of ₹10.10 crore alongside loans amounting to ₹52 lakh, according to PTI.
Geeta Gawali, daughter of former legislator Arun Gawali and contesting from Byculla-Agripada (ward 212), has reported assets of ₹7.26 crore, up from ₹3.38 crore during the 2019 Assembly elections. Her sister, Yogita Gawali, who is contesting from ward 207 for the first time, has declared assets of ₹3.65 crore.
BJP and Congress candidates
Former BJP corporator Neil Somaiya, son of party leader Kirit Somaiya, has declared assets amounting to ₹9.89 crore, a significant rise from ₹1.99 crore in 2017 — nearly a 400% increase.
Another BJP member, Prabhakar Shinde, has reported assets of ₹17.63 crore, compared to ₹11.9 crore previously, according to PTI.
Tejasvini Ghosalkar, who recently transitioned to the BJP after leaving Shiv Sena (UBT), has declared assets of ₹5.15 crore, rising from ₹25.82 lakh in 2017.
Congress candidate Sheetal Mhatre from Dahisar (ward 1) has reported assets of ₹4.27 crore, compared to ₹17.29 lakh during the previous civic elections, as noted by PTI.
Withdrawn and rejected nominations
The SEC has also published affidavits for candidates who either withdrew or had their nominations rejected. This includes former deputy mayor Babubhai Bhavanji, who declared assets of ₹31.44 crore, a significant increase from ₹8.23 lakh in 2017.
The deadline for filing nominations was December 30. The civic elections, slated for January 15, will see approximately 1,700 candidates competing for 227 wards across Mumbai.
