Southern Railway Reaches 97.63% Electrification of Its Network, Aiming for Complete Electrification by 2030 Through Energy Conservation Efforts
The Southern Railway has successfully electrified 97.63 percent of its network as it works towards achieving full electrification by 2030. According to Southern Railway (SR), out of the total 5,116 km network, 4,995 km are now equipped with electrified traction.

In alignment with Energy Conservation Day on December 14, the SR announced that the week from December 8 to 14 is designated as Energy Conservation Week, during which six divisions and workshops engage in extensive outreach activities emphasizing the importance of energy conservation in the area.

Pursuing its vision of complete electrification, an official release on Friday stated, “Dedicated to fulfilling its Mission of 100 percent electrification by 2030, Southern Railway has brought 97.63 percent of its extensive network, 4,995 km of 5,116 km, under electrified traction.” Regarding renewable energy, the Southern Railway reported a cumulative solar energy generation of 35.81 million units, resulting in savings of Rs 18.94 crore.
Five additional buildings have been presented to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to obtain the ‘Shunya’ certification. This certification pertains to energy-efficiency ratings established by the BEE under the Ministry of Power, indicating that the building largely achieves net-zero energy consumption from external sources through efficient design, equipment, and the use of renewable energy.

Throughout its facilities, the Southern Railway has fully transitioned to LED lighting, with 34,488 BLDC fans installed in offices, railway stations, and railway quarters to replace conventional fans.

Timers have been installed for station lights and yard lights, while energy savers have been added to welding plants, as stated.

Automated sensors for lighting and air conditioning control in office chambers and meeting rooms have been implemented to reduce power consumption. With its commitment to upgrading to efficient systems, the Southern Railway continues to adopt sustainable energy practices for the benefit of rail users and the public, it added.
