Supreme Court's Reminder on Local Elections: A Call to Action for Maharashtra's Democracy
A day after the model code of conduct was implemented for next month’s civic elections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took action by removing over 2,100 unauthorized banners, posters, and hoardings related to political parties in the city.

In an official statement, the BMC reported that it has taken down 2,103 illegal posters, banners, hoardings, kiosks, symbols, stickers, flags, and boards belonging to political parties from Mumbai’s streets by 3 pm on Tuesday, December 16.

The licensing department of the civic body mobilized efforts across Mumbai quickly.
“This action is being undertaken immediately to uphold the code of conduct, and it will persist going forward,” the release stated.

The BMC also urged relevant political parties, officials, and activists to assist the civic body in this endeavor and refrain from displaying any materials that could breach the code of conduct in the future.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission announced on Monday, December 15, the election schedule for 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, as the model code of conduct came into effect. According to the timetable, polling is set for January 15, 2026, with the counting of votes scheduled for January 16, 2026.
