Thick Fog Affects Delhi Airport: 97 Flights Canceled, More than 200 Delayed
Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were significantly impacted by heavy fog on Sunday, December 21, resulting in numerous cancellations and delays.

As reported by PTI, 97 flights were canceled, comprising 48 arrivals and 49 departures, due to reduced visibility that hindered aircraft movement. Additionally, over 200 flights experienced delays, with the average delay for departing flights around 23 minutes, according to data from flight tracking site Flightradar24.

Despite these disruptions, the airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) reported that operations were proceeding without major issues. DIAL issued a statement on X around noon, indicating that the airport’s situation was well-managed. As the busiest airport in the country, Indira Gandhi International Airport handles approximately 1,300 flights daily.

Earlier on the same day, Delhi airport released a passenger travel advisory at 8 am, confirming that flight operations were proceeding without issues. Travelers were advised to stay connected with their airlines for the most current updates on flight schedules and any operational changes.

In the meantime, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) released an advisory on Sunday, cautioning that fog conditions across parts of northern India are impacting visibility and could lead to delays or changes in flight operations at some airports.

As per ANI, AAI advised passengers to verify flight updates with their airlines through official sources and to allocate extra time for travel to the airport and completion of procedures. To support travelers amid the adverse weather, AAI has stationed passenger assistance teams at affected airports to offer on-ground support and guidance.

AAI emphasized that passenger safety and convenience are its utmost priority and also provided customer support contact numbers for major airlines to enable travelers to access real-time flight information.

According to ANI, IndiGo passengers can reach out to 01244973838, Air India at 011 6932 9333, SpiceJet at +91 (0)124 4983410 and +91 (0)124 7101600, and Air India Express at +91 124 443 5600 and +91 124 693 5600. Separately, IndiGo shared a travel advisory late on December 20, warning that early-morning fog across Delhi and parts of northern India could result in sudden visibility drops, impacting flight operations.

The airline mentioned that its teams would remain fully prepared overnight and would monitor weather conditions closely. Passengers were encouraged to check flight status prior to heading to the airport and to consider rebooking or seeking refunds if their flights are affected.

Flight operations have been facing disruptions for several days at Delhi and other northern Indian airports due to persistent dense fog impacting visibility, which is a frequent challenge during the winter season.
