Bangladesh Turmoil: Student Leader Osman Hadi Buried in Dhaka Under Tight Security
On Saturday, December 20, Bangladesh came to a standstill as thousands gathered to pay their respects to Sharif Osman Hadi, a notable leader and Inqilab Moncho convenor, who was fatally shot by masked assailants on December 12.

The funeral prayer service took place at Manik Mia Avenue in front of the Parliament in Dhaka, attracting a large crowd, many of whom wrapped themselves in the national flag while chanting for justice regarding Hadi’s death.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, Hadi was laid to rest next to the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, a highly esteemed figure in Bangladesh. The burial site was arranged near the Dhaka University Central Mosque, where mourners began to gather early in the morning.

After two days of demonstrations by supporters of the Inqilab Moncho, the atmosphere was somber, with national flags flown at half-mast and special prayers held in various places of worship. The funeral service took place under heightened security, with the Border Guard Bangladesh and police present at the Parliament building and other key sites in Dhaka.

The Inqilab Moncho had requested that only the national flag of Bangladesh be displayed during the funeral prayer service.

Earlier, Dhaka University Assistant Proctor Rafiqul Islam noted that Hadi would be buried on the south side of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s grave, as reported by the Bangladeshi daily, The Business Standard.

Hadi’s death triggered widespread protests and unrest throughout Bangladesh, leading the National Cyber Security Agency to urge the public to report social media posts that incite terrorism or violence, according to BDNews24.

On Saturday, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued a statement indicating that such posts could be reported via WhatsApp and email. Officials stated that the complaints would be examined by the National Cyber Security Agency before being sent to social media platforms through the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

Hadi, a prominent leader in the July 2024 student uprising in Bangladesh, was shot in the head by masked attackers last week. He was airlifted to Singapore for medical interventions but succumbed to his injuries on December 18, after battling for six days.

The post-mortem examination of Hadi was conducted at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, according to reports from The Business Standard.
