Nine of the top-10 male players and nine of the top-10 female players in the world have officially signed up for the U.S. Open’s newly revamped mixed doubles event, as announced by tournament organizers on Tuesday. Former singles champions Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu will be competing together.

The event will take place one week prior to the singles main draw during “Fan Week” and will feature a prize pool of $1 million for the winning duo.

A total of sixteen teams have registered, with the entry window closing on July 28. After that, the top eight teams with the highest combined singles rankings will gain direct acceptance into the draw, along with eight additional wildcard entries.
“In our early talks about redesigning and enhancing the U.S. Open mixed doubles championship, we sought a way to highlight the best male and female players competing alongside and against each other,” said USTA CEO Lew Sherr.

“We felt confident that we could generate excitement among the top players for this unique opportunity. The teams that have already entered are absolutely thrilling for all of us.”

“This shows player backing for our vision, and we believe fans will truly enjoy it.”

Other notable pairings include two-time U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka partnering with Nick Kyrgios, along with Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The matches will be played in a best of three sets format, with sets played to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at four-all, and a 10-point tiebreaker replacing the third set. The final will be a best-of-three set match played to six games.

Despite the participation of prominent players like Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Naomi Osaka, the new format has faced criticism from well-known doubles players.

Defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori labeled the revised format as a “profound injustice” that undermines doubles players, deeming the new event a “pseudo-exhibition focused solely on entertainment and spectacle.”

The U.S. Open had indicated that these changes were inspired by the success of the “Mixed Madness” exhibition event held prior to last year’s tournament, which teamed various high-profile singles players.

“Making decisions solely based on profit logic is deeply flawed in some cases,” said Errani and Vavassori.

The duo has also entered this year’s competition.
