OpenAI Secures $200 Million Deal with U.S. Department of Defense

OpenAI partners with Google in groundbreaking cloud agreement amid AI competition, according to sources.
OpenAI has secured a $200 million contract for a pilot program designed to assist the US Defense Department in exploring how artificial intelligence can be utilized for various administrative and security functions.

The year-long contract, announced by the Defense Department on Monday, represents the latest effort by the creators of ChatGPT to market their technology to the US government.

In a blog post published on the same day, OpenAI stated that this contract marks its inaugural project under a new initiative named OpenAI for Government.

As part of this initiative, OpenAI will collaborate with the Defense Department to identify ways AI can streamline administrative responsibilities, such as facilitating healthcare for US military personnel and enhancing cyberattack prevention measures.

OpenAI for Government centralizes all of OpenAI’s current government initiatives within a single branch of the company, which includes ChatGPT Gov — a version of ChatGPT specifically designed for government employees — along with collaborations with NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Treasury Department.

Additionally, the company announced late last year its partnership with weapons manufacturer Anduril Industries Inc. to develop AI systems for counter-drone technologies, further indicating its expanding engagement with the US government, particularly in the realm of national security.

Recently, OpenAI has expressed intentions to develop AI tools that align with democratic principles. The startup has also hired a former senior Pentagon official to lead its national security policy team and appointed the ex-head of the National Security Agency to its board.
