Is Shashi Tharoor Facing Expulsion? Congress Adopts a Wait-and-See Approach
The Congress has come to terms with the reality that its MP Shashi Tharoor will be heading the government’s multiparty delegation abroad to address Pakistan’s cross-border actions and its behavior during the military standoff following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Meanwhile, the Congress is struggling with Tharoor’s presence like a thorn in its side, as there’s growing sentiment among influential party members that he should be dismissed.

A strong faction within the party believes that Tharoor is playing into the BJP’s hands, fearing that his continued involvement could undermine the party’s outlook for the Kerala assembly elections in 2026. Given past experiences with the departures of Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasada, and others, these leaders think it would be prudent to part ways with him before he causes any upheaval.
Additionally, they feel that Tharoor should have exercised more caution in his comments, and that as a member of the delegation, he either should have declined or consulted the party before accepting the role. His immediate social media post, where he expressed pride in leading the delegation, angered the Congress, which believed he should have included the party in his announcement.

The dilemma facing the Congress is whether to take action against Tharoor or even issue him a warning, as this could provide additional leverage to the BJP in their attacks. Taking any measures now might also weaken the party’s current stance of unwavering support for the Centre and its actions following the recent terror incident, including Operation Sindoor.

Sources, however, informed News18 that it is likely just a matter of time before Tharoor is placed on notice. The party will be keeping a close eye on his next steps.

According to sources, Tharoor, being a four-time MP, has reached his limit in terms of political longevity within the party. If he remains, it could jeopardize the party’s future, particularly in Kerala. The party is expected to formulate a strategy in the coming days, they added.
