Kamal Haasan set to join Rajya Sabha as DMK nominates three candidates for Upper House.
Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan is poised to join the Rajya Sabha, with the DMK designating one of its seats for him and unveiling three additional candidates for the upcoming Upper House elections.

On Wednesday, May 28, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party revealed its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

A seat has been allocated to Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam party, as per their prior agreement, enabling him to run in the elections.
The candidates named by the DMK include party leader SR Sivalingam, senior advocate and incumbent MP P Wilson, and acclaimed Tamil author Salma.

This announcement follows the seat-sharing arrangement between DMK and MNM, in which DMK allocated one of its four Rajya Sabha seats to accommodate Haasan.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) previously announced that the biennial elections for the six vacant assembly seats will take place on June 19, 2025.

The vacancies stem from the upcoming tenures of members – Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, M. Shanmugam, N. Chandrasegharan, M. Mohamed Abdulla, P. Wilson, and Vaiko – concluding on July 25, according to the ECI.

“I can say thank you. Thank you for the opportunity,” Haasan expressed to reporters in Kerala when queried about the DMK announcement.

Haasan also expressed his gratitude to Tamil Nadu Deputy CM Udhay Stalin after receiving his congratulations on social media. “Dear brother Udhay Stalin, thank you for your heartfelt wishes,” Haasan commented on X (formerly Twitter).
