The “As Seen on Netflix” section was unveiled in New Delhi on Thursday (August 6) as part of the ongoing partnership between Netflix India and the Ministry of Tourism.
This initiative aims to offer insights into the destinations, traditions, and experiences portrayed in Netflix content.
The launch coincides with Netflix’s 10-year milestone in India.
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos and Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat discussed how entertainment content can shape travel preferences and enhance awareness of cultural sites.
This collaboration follows a memorandum of understanding established last year between Netflix India and the Ministry of Tourism. Earlier this year, videos highlighting India’s wildlife and cultural heritage were showcased at ITB Berlin and are being utilized by Indian missions abroad to promote tourism.
Films and series as tourism touchpoints
The new section will aggregate information on locations depicted in Netflix productions, linking them to relevant tourism details.
Shekhawat emphasized that storytelling can effectively showcase India’s heritage, destinations, and traditions to a global audience while bolstering the country’s creative landscape.
Sarandos noted that stories rooted in diverse regions of India have reached audiences worldwide over the last decade, motivating viewers to delve into the cultures and locales highlighted in these narratives.
Since its launch in India in 2016, Netflix has produced and distributed content in various languages and genres. Notable titles like The Elephant Whisperers, Amar Singh Chamkila, and Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar have featured aspects of India’s wildlife, music traditions, and historical backdrops.
