The company announced a consolidated net profit of ₹1,095.87 crore for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, up from ₹1,065.02 crore during the same period last year, reflecting a 2.9% year-over-year growth.
Although the profit growth was limited, the company displayed a significant improvement in operational performance during the quarter. Consolidated operational revenue surged 18.5% year-on-year, reaching ₹3,808.31 crore compared to ₹3,213.77 crore in the previous year’s quarter.
Revenue growth suggests that the company earned more from its primary power generation activities during the period. For a hydropower producer, revenue is closely tied to factors such as electricity output, water resource availability, plant operational efficiency, and demand from power distribution firms.
Significant enhancement in operating profitability
NHPC’s operational performance improved notably during the quarter, with earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rising 30.6% year-over-year to ₹2,352.19 crore, up from ₹1,801.51 crore.
The growth in EBITDA outpaced revenue growth, leading to an increase in operating margins. The EBITDA margin rose to 61.8% for the quarter, compared to 56.1% the previous year.
In simpler terms, the margin expansion indicates that NHPC retained a greater proportion of every rupee generated from operations as operating profit compared to the same quarter last year.
The rise in operating profitability indicates that the company experienced better operational leverage during the period. Hydropower projects generally require significant upfront capital, but once they are up and running, their cost structure enables firms to achieve comparatively stable operating margins as power generation increases.
Nonetheless, the overall profit growth was limited relative to EBITDA growth, largely due to below-operating-level expenses, including depreciation, financing costs, and other expenses affecting the bottom line.
Hydropower’s increasing significance in India’s energy transition
NHPC’s performance coincides with hydropower’s vital role in India’s renewable energy strategy.
While solar and wind capacity has grown swiftly, these sources rely on weather conditions and may not always supply electricity on demand. Hydropower plants can produce energy based on water availability and operational needs, offering flexibility to the electricity grid.
This flexibility makes hydroelectric capacity crucial as India incorporates more renewable energy sources while striving to maintain grid stability.
NHPC manages several hydroelectric power projects across various states and has been actively involved in enhancing large-scale hydropower capacity in the nation. The company’s performance is shaped by project execution, regulatory approvals, water resource availability, and levels of power generation.
Commitment to increasing clean energy capacity
The company is focusing on boosting its generation capacity through new hydropower projects and investigating opportunities in related fields.
In addition to traditional hydropower, pumped storage initiatives have become a focal point for the energy sector. These projects can store energy and assist in balancing fluctuations from renewable sources, especially as solar and wind contributions grow.
For NHPC, plans for expansion and the timelines for executing these projects are crucial factors that will influence future growth. Major infrastructure undertakings typically demand substantial investment and prolonged execution periods before significantly impacting earnings.
The company did not provide further operational insights alongside the quarterly results.
