Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh Designated as India’s 101st Ramsar Site | Check Out the Photos

The Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh has officially been recognized as India’s 101st Ramsar site, marking the state’s first wetland to receive such international acknowledgment under the Ramsar Convention, as announced by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Monday.

In a message on X, Yadav highlighted that this designation signifies “a crucial milestone for biodiversity, water and climate security, and sustainable livelihoods.” He referred to the pristine freshwater lake located in the Eastern Himalayas as a biodiversity hotspot, noting that each new Ramsar site reinforces India’s commitment to preserving nature while ensuring the well-being of communities reliant on these ecosystems.

This high-altitude freshwater lake is nourished by perennial mountain streams and encircled by lush vegetation.

The site and its surrounding area host over 150 tree species and 49 species of orchids, emphasizing its ecological importance.

The Ramsar designation will introduce specialized management strategies, enhanced legal protection, and access to global technical expertise to aid in conserving the delicate ecosystem of the Kamlang Tiger Reserve, an official stated, according to PTI.

As a high-altitude freshwater wetland, this lake plays a vital role in local hydrology regulation, carbon storage, and maintaining river flows downstream, the official added.

PTI reported that this international recognition is anticipated to foster community-driven eco-tourism for indigenous populations in Lohit district and encourage scientific research, monitoring, and access to conservation funding.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu praised this recognition as a milestone for the state’s ecological conservation efforts. In a post on X, he expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, stating that the Ramsar designation would enhance biodiversity conservation, promote sustainable livelihoods, and inspire future generations to protect the state’s natural ecosystems.
