In an exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18, Tata Steel’s Vice President of Corporate Services, D. B. Sundara Ramam, and Jamshedpur FC CEO Mukul Choudhari discussed the reasons behind the company’s decision and the players’ appeals for a review.
Ramam mentioned that the Tata Steel Board approved the decision after thorough consideration, emphasizing that it did not stem from the ISL’s ₹1.10 Cr participation fee for the new club-run model. He clarified that financial factors, such as broadcast revenue or uncertainty regarding the league’s commercial structure, played no role in the decision.
“Sports, as we always state, is integral to the culture at Tata Steel. We have never viewed sports in terms of profit or loss,” Ramam stated. He highlighted that the focus will instead shift to enhancing the Tata Football Academy and grassroots football initiatives.
Regarding the timing of the decision, Jamshedpur FC CEO Mukul Choudhari explained that the board chose to act now to avoid a long-term commitment to the ISL, preferring to make a decision before entering into a four-year obligation rather than exiting partway through.
In response to the emotional appeals from Jamshedpur FC players online, Ramam expressed gratitude for their commitment but reaffirmed that their withdrawal decision would not be reversed. He noted that CEO Mukul Choudhari had briefed the players before the withdrawal letter was sent to the AIFF.
In a viral video, players expressed their confusion over the “unexpected” decision.
Choudhari confirmed that the 12 players still under contract will have their agreements honored in accordance with AIFF and FIFA regulations. He also mentioned that three to four senior staff members would be affected, although the remaining grassroots coaching personnel would continue to support the club’s youth initiatives. Ramam from Tata Steel assured that none of Jamshedpur FC’s sporting facilities, including football training centers and high-performance centres, will be closed, as the company plans to repurpose them for grassroots development and athlete training.
The firm aims to intensify its grassroots programs, identifying talent from as young as seven and strengthening pathways through its football academy.
This decision has drawn disappointment from Indian football legends Sunil Chhetri and Bhaichung Bhutia. The future of Jamshedpur FC in next year’s Durand Cup remains uncertain, but supporters remain optimistic.
