The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) explains that the shift is due to space issues at the Secretariat and the increasing number of officials, visitors, and public representatives visiting each day.
The current Chief Minister’s Office has been situated on the first floor of Fort St. George’s main heritage building for nearly sixty years, a tenure that predates former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. Since that time, each Chief Minister has operated from this same office.
Even though this location has served successive Chief Ministers for more than six decades without relocating, Vijay has decided to move it to a new site, with the CMO asserting that the change is motivated solely by space issues and administrative demands.
There are also reports suggesting that, reflecting the Chief Minister’s preferences, the new office is being redesigned to meet international standards. A significant feature is its panoramic sea view, which is thought to create a serene and tranquil work environment.

However, some reports from senior journalists and Dinamalar present a different perspective. According to these accounts, Vijay’s astrologer purportedly advised that to “remain at the top,” the Chief Minister’s office should be placed at the highest point. Consequently, the new Chief Minister’s Office is reportedly being established on the 10th floor of the Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai, which is the building’s top level.
The discourse has also rekindled discussions about Vijay’s perceived affinity for astrology and spiritual practices. Since entering politics, his public appearances often highlight the black sacred mark on his forehead and the green and red sacred threads around his wrist. Additionally, he has frequented notable temples, including the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur and various temples in Karnataka, during significant phases of his political journey.
The conversation escalated earlier this year when his astrologer, Ratan Pandit, was appointed as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Chief Minister’s Office. This appointment sparked considerable criticism from political parties and the public, resulting in its revocation within a day. Taken together, these events have intensified speculation regarding the influence of astrology on Vijay’s political and administrative choices, even though the government maintains that decisions are based solely on administrative factors.
The relocation will necessitate substantial administrative rearrangements. The 10th floor of the Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai currently accommodates the offices of the Principal Secretaries for 34 government departments. These offices have been instructed to move to available spaces on the Ground, Second, and Third floors of the Chepauk Kalaivanar Arangam.
Furthermore, the Tourism Department has been told to relocate its office from the 10th floor to the ninth floor, where the department is already operational. Traditionally, the 10th floor has also hosted the annual conferences of District Collectors and Superintendents of Police, as it contains a conference hall and a dining area for official meetings.
The Director of Information and Public Relations has been assigned to review existing space, reallocate offices, and ensure the necessary infrastructure is established. Officials are reportedly striving to complete the transition and inaugurate the new Chief Minister’s Office by the end of August.
In the meantime, the Tamil Nadu Secretariat Association has voiced opposition to the planned office relocation, arguing that it would create numerous practical and administrative challenges.

In a letter to Chief Minister Vijay, Association President Venkatesan and Secretary Harishankar raised concerns regarding the relocation. They noted that once the Chief Minister’s Office moves, the Home, Prohibition, and Excise Departments are expected to take over the current Chief Minister’s office. However, they contend that the existing space is inadequate to accommodate the entire staff along with the files and records from these departments.
Additionally, they emphasized that the Press Department should remain within the Secretariat for administrative efficiency. The association further expressed safety concerns, arguing that should a major fire or emergency occur in the main Secretariat building, employees relocated to certain areas of the complex might face challenges in ensuring their safety.
The association also claimed that the government failed to consult them or invite their representatives to discuss the implications of the relocation prior to issuing the orders.
With the government officially stating that the move is due to administrative reasons, reports suggesting connections to Vastu, and opposition from the Secretariat employees’ association, this proposed office relocation has transformed into a significant political topic, fueling renewed debate over both the practicality of the move and the alleged impact of astrology on the Chief Minister’s decisions.
