Samsung Makes a Major Investment in Foldable Technology with Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Compact Fold 8 as Competition Heats Up
On Wednesday (July 22), Samsung revealed its latest foldable smartphones, marking the arrival of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Flip 8. The South Korean tech giant aims to reinforce its dominant position in the premium smartphone segment as competition heats up.

This launch, part of the second Galaxy Unpacked event of 2026, introduces Samsung’s first Ultra-branded foldable device. Alongside these smartphones, the company also unveiled the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and Galaxy Watch 9.

With Chinese manufacturers releasing thinner foldables at competitive prices and Apple’s anticipated entry into the foldable market, Samsung is optimistic that its revamped lineup, AI-enhanced software, and innovative hardware will further expand this category.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Akshay Gupta, Head of Products (Mobile Experience Business) at Samsung India, stated that the company’s priority this year is fostering device adoption rather than meeting shipment quotas.

“We have launched three new devices and introduced an entirely new form factor. The Fold has now reached its seventh generation, and we have significantly refined the experience. The new Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a significant step toward transforming the foldable market. Our goal is to enable consumers to truly maximize the capabilities of these devices,” Gupta said.

Fold 8 Ultra leads the way

The standout model this year is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which Samsung claims is its slimmest foldable to date, measuring just 4.1 mm when unfolded.

This flagship device boasts new display technology that significantly minimizes crease visibility, enhancing the smoothness of opening and closing. It also features Samsung’s brightest foldable display, reaching a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy Gen 5 processor, the Fold 8 Ultra is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery and 45 W fast charging – the largest battery ever in a Fold device.

A new ‘passport-sized’ foldable

In addition to the Ultra model, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a device designed with a totally new form factor.

This compact device, when folded, resembles the size of a passport and weighs only 201 grams, making it what Samsung claims is the lightest foldable smartphone in the world.

Gupta explained that this design caters to evolving consumer behavior.

“Consumers are engaging with content in various aspect ratios. On the cover screen, they can scroll through reels and short videos, while unfolding the device provides an immersive 7.6-inch display for OTT content. In portrait mode, it’s perfect for reading books or articles,” he remarked.

Samsung also launched the Galaxy Z Flip 8, which weighs approximately 180 grams and features a 50 MP camera, making it the company’s thinnest and lightest Flip smartphone to date.

AI takes the spotlight

The Galaxy Z8 series comes with One UI 9, based on Android 17, featuring seven years of Android OS and security updates.

Samsung has optimized Galaxy AI for each foldable format. The Fold models enhance multitasking with larger displays, while the Flip 8’s FlexWindow offers AI-driven information and shortcuts without needing to open the device. The phones also include collaborative AI features, such as Gemini Intelligence.

“As AI evolves, mobile devices will become the most personal gateways to experiences that understand and adapt to each user,” stated TM Roh, Chief Executive Officer, President, and Head of the Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics.

Focus on the premium market

Gupta noted that premium smartphones continue to perform better than the general smartphone market, giving Samsung confidence in the face of growing competition.

“Competition is beneficial for the industry, but ultimately, consumers will decide. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 was extremely successful in India, and we believe the new Galaxy Z8 series will maintain that momentum,” he added.

Addressing the rising costs of memory and components, Gupta acknowledged it as a widespread industry challenge but affirmed that Samsung aims to use affordability programs instead of immediately passing costs onto consumers.

“We will take measures to keep these devices affordable through our partnerships, ensuring they are easily accessible,” he stated.

Gupta also mentioned that all Samsung smartphones, including the newly introduced Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, are manufactured in India. Samsung’s premium lineup now ranges from the Galaxy S25 FE series to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, offering consumers a variety of options across different price ranges.
