During the recent visit of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to Europe, India and Spain agreed to initiate technical discussions on establishing interoperability between UPI and Spain’s digital payments platform, Bizum.
In addition, talks with Estonia also focused on fintech collaboration and UPI integration.
Although the timelines and specifics of the integration are still under discussion, greater acceptance of UPI could provide Indian tourists with an additional digital payment method while abroad.
The implications of UPI integration for travelers
UPI has gained significant traction as a payment option in India, enabling users to execute instant bank transfers through mobile apps. If these kinds of linkages extend internationally, Indian travelers may utilize UPI-enabled applications for payments at merchants that participate in partner countries.
This would facilitate small-value transactions, making payments at restaurants, retail outlets, local transportation services, and other daily expenses much easier.
For travelers, having a familiar payment method can minimize the need to carry substantial cash or rely solely on international cards.
Ravi Gosain, President of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO)—the leading body of the Indian tourism industry—stated that the interoperability between UPI and Bizum represents efforts to create a connected global real-time payments network. In addition to enhancing payment convenience for tourists and businesses, such partnerships could help lower transaction costs, accelerate settlements, and strengthen economic ties between nations.
Rohit Mahajan, Founder and CEO of plutos ONE, a Noida-based fintech startup, mentioned that linking two established instant payment systems could expedite cross-border payments, making them simpler and more budget-friendly for individuals and businesses alike. Furthermore, he noted that the broader adoption of UPI on a global scale could bolster trade and innovation between India and Europe.
India’s broader ambitions for global digital payments
India has been actively pursuing the expansion of UPI internationally through collaborations with various countries. UPI services are already operational in several regions, including France, Singapore, the UAE, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Qatar.
This expansion aligns with India’s overarching goal to promote its digital public infrastructure on a global scale and facilitate smoother cross-border payment connections.
Key information for Indian travelers
While UPI continues to expand internationally, acceptance will hinge on local partnerships, the availability of merchants, and support from payment applications. Travelers may still require international debit or credit cards for specific transactions such as hotel deposits, larger payments, or locations where UPI is not supported.
It’s essential to recognize that while digital payment connectivity can enhance convenience for travelers, users should remain vigilant about applicable foreign exchange fees, transaction limits, and payment terms when utilizing any international payment method.
