Cricket Community Pays Tribute to West Indies Legend Garry Sobers Following His Passing

Sir Garfield Sobers Passes Away at 89 – Everything You Should Know About Cricket's All-Time Greatest All-Rounder
The cricket community honored West Indies icon Sir Garry Sobers, who passed away at his home in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Friday at the age of 89. Widely celebrated as one of the all-time greatest all-round cricketers, Sobers thrived as a batter, bowler, fielder, and captain throughout an extraordinary international career.

Sobers made his Test debut for the West Indies in 1954 after just two first-class matches. He represented the Caribbean team for two decades and led the squad for seven years, leaving behind one of the most distinguished legacies in cricket history.

Sunil Gavaskar expressed, “This is likely the saddest day for cricket. The greatest cricketer to grace the earth has departed. No words can truly capture Sir Garfield Sobers the cricketer. He epitomized everything we aspire to be when we pick up a bat or ball as children. Memories are flooding back, and that’s what I will hold close to my heart forever. Rest in peace, Sir Garfield. You will forever remain in our hearts.”

Virender Sehwag commented on X, “‘All-rounder’ is a term used by many. It was crafted for Sir Garfield Sobers. Fast bowling, spin bowling, left-handed poetic batting. Six sixes in an over, 365 not out, at just 23 years old. A true visionary.”

Former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop honored Sobers for his generosity and the immense pride he brought to Barbados and the Caribbean through his achievements and leadership.

He stated on X, “Like so many others, my heart feels heavy at the loss of the great Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers. He was always generous with his time and advice. He elevated Barbados and the West Indian islands to an unprecedented status in the world through his performance and leadership on the field. It’s sad he is no longer with us, but we cherish the memories he left behind. RIP.”

Indian cricket great Yuvraj Singh paid homage to Sobers, calling him a trailblazer who redefined greatness. Remembering him as the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over, Yuvraj remarked that the West Indies legend inspired countless generations with his exceptional talent, humility, and grace, affirming that his legacy would endure forever.
“The first man to hit six sixes in an over, Sir Garfield Sobers showed the world that greatness knows no bounds. It’s hard to articulate what he meant to cricket. He performed feats on the field that most could only dream of, and he did it with grace, humility, and joy. Every generation has looked up to him, and future generations will continue to do so. Rest in peace, Sir. Your legacy will last forever,” he penned on Instagram.
