During a high-level discussion on Sustainable Transport Strategy, Sawant directed the Department of New and Renewable Energy to finalize the subsidy scheme and develop a plan for transitioning industrial establishments to cleaner energy sources.
An official statement indicated that the chief minister instructed the department to create a policy for the gradual replacement of diesel generator (DG) sets in industrial and commercial spaces.
This proposed policy aims to promote the adoption of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), solar photovoltaic systems combined with battery storage, gas-based systems where applicable, and other sustainable energy innovations.
Sawant emphasized that the policy should outline a clear implementation plan, financial incentives, consultations with stakeholders, and regulatory measures to support a gradual shift to cleaner energy sources.
He directed the department to create a comprehensive scheme providing up to 50% subsidy on electric vehicles specifically for licensed motorcycle pilots and auto-rickshaw drivers to motivate the transition from petrol-fueled vehicles.
As part of the state’s electric mobility infrastructure, Sawant stated that the Department of New and Renewable Energy will set up 70 new electric vehicle charging stations throughout Goa under the Centre’s ‘PM E-Drive Scheme’.
Additionally, he revealed that diesel buses operated by the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC), which are approximately 10 years old, will be retrofitted with compressed natural gas (CNG) engines to minimize emissions.
