Sir Garfield Sobers Passes Away at 89 – Everything You Should Know About Cricket's All-Time Greatest All-Rounder
Sir Garfield Sobers, celebrated as the finest all-rounder in the history of cricket, passed away at the age of 89 in Barbados on Friday.

Sobers leaves behind an incredible legacy, having excelled with both bat and ball while redefining the all-rounder position during a remarkable international career with the West Indies.

Former Australia captain Richie Benaud hailed Sobers as the greatest all-round cricketer ever, lauding his brilliance as a batsman, his outstanding fielding skills, and his unique capability to bowl left-arm pace, orthodox spin, and wrist spin effectively.
Born in Barbados, Sobers made his first-class debut at just 16 years old in 1953 before receiving his Test cap for the West Indies a year later.

His defining moment came in 1958 when he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, establishing a then-world record for the highest individual score in Test cricket. This record stood for 36 years before being broken by fellow West Indian Brian Lara in 1994.

Sobers was the first batsman to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket, achieving this feat while representing Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in Swansea in 1968.

He concluded his international cricket career in 1974 at the age of 38, leaving a lasting impact on the sport.

Throughout 93 Test matches, Sobers accumulated 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and took 235 wickets. His batting average remains among the highest in Test history for players with over 5,000 runs.

In a distinguished first-class career spanning 383 matches, he scored more than 28,000 runs and claimed over 1,000 wickets, representing Barbados, South Australia, and Nottinghamshire among others.

Sobers was knighted in 1975 for his contributions to cricket, a recognition of a career that has set exceptional standards.

His influence on the game goes beyond mere statistics, with countless generations of cricketers viewing him as the gold standard for all-round excellence.
