The franchise announced on Monday that this decision followed multiple candid discussions between Fleming and the management.
“The decision was made with respect and gratitude, following a series of candid discussions between Fleming and the Super Kings management,” CSK stated in a release.
Former New Zealand captain Fleming joined Chennai as a player in the inaugural IPL season of 2008 before becoming the head coach prior to the 2009 season.
Under his guidance, CSK became one of the league’s most successful and consistent teams, securing five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 championships.
CSK’s latest IPL victory occurred in 2023, although the franchise has not made the playoffs in the last three seasons.
CSK managing director KS Viswanathan acknowledged Fleming’s role in shaping the franchise’s identity over nearly two decades.
“From the beginning of this journey, Fleming not only helped define our playing style but also what we aspired to be as a franchise,” Viswanathan remarked.
“He fostered a culture based on consistency, humility, and prioritizing the team. His talent for understanding individuals and maximizing their potential has been one of his key strengths.”
Looking back on his departure, Fleming referred to his time with the franchise as the pinnacle of his coaching career.
“Eighteen years is a considerable span in sports, and I depart with immense gratitude,” Fleming shared.
“My experience with Chennai Super Kings has been the highlight of my coaching journey. I take pride in all we have accomplished. CSK will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will support the team for many years to come.”
Fleming leaves a legacy that has significantly shaped the IPL era, with his long-standing partnership with captain MS Dhoni being one of the key elements of Chennai Super Kings’ ongoing success.
