The US has conducted strikes against Iran, focusing on air defense and port facilities, following Iran’s attack on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran labeled this as “treacherous action.”
A US official revealed that the strikes concentrated on Iranian air defense systems, port facilities, coastal surveillance infrastructure, ground-to-air missile sites, and locations utilized for anti-ship cruise missiles and drones. The US military stated that this military action was in retaliation for Iran’s previous day’s assaults on the vessels, asserting that Tehran’s conduct was “unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear breach of the ceasefire.”
Prior to the strikes, the US also canceled a temporary sanctions waiver on Iranian oil, with the Treasury Department revoking a license that allowed Iran to produce, market, and transport crude oil and related products until August 21. This action has been viewed by some analysts as potentially significant to the ongoing agreement.
In response, Iran’s foreign ministry condemned Washington’s actions, accusing it of “treacherous action” and “major violations” of the existing memorandum of understanding, while pledging to “take whatever measures necessary to protect its national interests and security.” Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, stated that Tehran was prepared to “take decisive actions to ensure its national interests and security.”
Reports from Iranian state media indicated that six projectiles struck the vicinity of the Taheroui pier in Sirik, southern Iran. Although there were no civilian fatalities reported, an Iranian state TV correspondent mentioned that several individuals sustained injuries from shrapnel caused by an “enemy projectile” hitting a commercial pier nearby. Additionally, strikes were reported at fishing piers in Sirik and Bandar Abbas, resulting in several fishing boats being set ablaze.
