Our Downfall: Indian Team Management Reflects on Ireland Whitewash
India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate expressed a sense of disbelief within the team following Ireland’s historic 2-0 T20I series sweep, noting that the world champions faltered due to their struggle to adapt to the tough conditions in Belfast.

In a stunning turn of events, Ireland triumphed over India for the second time in three days, securing a one-run victory on Sunday, which marked Shreyas Iyer’s first loss as India’s full-time T20I captain.

“There’s a bit of disbelief,” Ten Doeschate remarked after the match.
“It’s quite challenging to criticize a team that has just won a World Cup. We’ve been outplayed or outsmarted by a side that executed the basics exceptionally well.”

The former Netherlands international commended Ireland for their disciplined efforts while highlighting that India’s batters faced difficulties adjusting after transitioning from the high-scoring environment of the Indian Premier League.

“Firstly, hats off to Ireland, and secondly, we need to learn how to adapt to varying conditions. That’s likely the biggest takeaway from this,” he stated.

India’s aggressive batting strategy fell short on the seamer-friendly Stormont pitch, where the movement off the surface and larger boundaries necessitated a more cautious game plan.

“That was fundamentally our downfall. It’s something we discussed beforehand, but we simply didn’t manage it effectively during the game,” he explained.

“We are likely too accustomed to a pace and style that allows for more frequent sixes.”

The assistant coach also cautioned that similar challenges await India during their upcoming tour of England, where the conditions are predicted to favor the bowlers.

“I believe this will hold true for our time in England as well. Perhaps slightly quicker pitches and less wind, but we must adapt and be significantly smarter about our approach if we want to achieve victories there,” he added.

India will aim to recover as they embark on their white-ball tour of England, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs, commencing on July 1.
