Warren Buffett delays midyear donation to the Gates Foundation due to Epstein investigation, according to reports.
For the first time in nearly 20 years, Warren Buffett has opted not to make his customary midyear donation to the Gates Foundation. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the billionaire investor is awaiting the results of an external audit concerning the foundation’s previous associations with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein before reaching a decision.

Sources familiar with Buffett’s intentions indicated to the news outlet that the 95-year-old chairman of Berkshire Hathaway will likely reconsider the donation later this year, possibly coinciding with the release of his traditional Thanksgiving letter.

Typically, Buffett has contributed billions of dollars’ worth of Berkshire Hathaway shares to the Gates Foundation each June or early July as part of his lifetime giving commitment made nearly two decades ago.
Reasons for Buffett’s delay

The review, initiated by Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman, is being conducted by the law firm WilmerHale. It aims to investigate the foundation’s past interactions with Epstein, with findings expected later this summer.

The report also noted that Buffett and his close associates have been in communication with foundation leaders, including Suzman, to gain a clearer understanding of the review and the foundation’s previous ties to Epstein.

According to Reuters, Buffett has donated over $47 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Gates Foundation in the past two decades, making it the largest beneficiary of his charitable contributions.

Concerns regarding Bill Gates’ past connections

The Gates Foundation has come under renewed scrutiny due to Bill Gates’ prior association with Epstein. Reuters reported that emails released by the US Department of Justice earlier this year revealed correspondence between Epstein and members of the Gates Foundation’s staff.

Bill Gates has not faced any criminal charges. He has consistently expressed regret for meeting Epstein, asserting that those interactions were focused on philanthropy. Gates also denied having any involvement with victims of Epstein’s sexual abuse and stated he never witnessed any criminal activity by Epstein.

Last year, Buffett’s contribution to the Gates Foundation was reportedly valued at over $4.5 billion. As it stands, this year’s donation will be paused until the review is finalized.
