India and the US Set for Enhanced Cooperation in Technology and Trade as Discussions Advance: Greer
As India and the United States move towards finalizing an interim trade agreement, US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer has indicated that the countries are looking beyond traditional trade to foster deeper collaboration in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.

Greer’s comments follow a recent round of negotiations in New Delhi, where officials assessed progress on the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) addressing market access, digital trade, supply-chain resilience, non-tariff barriers, and strategic sectors. Both parties aim to finalize an interim deal before the current US tariff arrangements lapse on July 24.

During an interview in New Delhi, Greer noted that India’s expanding technology ambitions offer substantial opportunities for collaborative efforts.
“We recognize that India has a rich history in agriculture and manufacturing, but we also see their progress in technology,” Greer stated. “They aspire to advance in AI and are eager to collaborate with the United States on future technologies and trade.”

These remarks reflect Washington’s broader objectives for the relationship as negotiators reportedly move closer to an interim trade agreement.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently mentioned that the two nations are “rapidly moving towards resolving all outstanding issues” of the agreement, while US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor indicated that only a minor portion of the negotiations remains unsettled.

Greer also emphasized the significance of political engagement in enhancing economic ties.

“President Trump and Prime Minister Modi share a remarkable relationship that they’ve developed over many years,” he remarked, referring to the leaders’ recent meeting at the G7 summit in Evian, France.

According to Greer, the leaders agreed to “advance the relationship to the next level,” with the ongoing trade negotiations being part of a larger initiative to expand cooperation across technology, investment, and strategic sectors.

“This encompasses the trade deal we’re working on, as well as every facet of the relationship,” he concluded, noting that US-India ties are likely to strengthen in the coming weeks.
