In a notable interview with CNBC-TV18, Patel emphasized that India is strategically placed to address an anticipated global talent shortage as AI adoption increases.
“India possesses an impressive demographic edge. The number of individuals under 30 is a tremendous asset,” Patel remarked.
“If there is going to be a scarcity of skilled workers, India finds itself in an exceptional situation.”
Patel, who hails from India, commended the swift response of policymakers and government officials to challenges, noting that the public sector in India increasingly mirrors the agility of startups.
“The entrepreneurial spirit exhibited by the public sector is extraordinary,” he stated. “Whenever I visit India and engage with government leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, it feels like I’m interacting with startups.”
He recounted a situation where Cisco executives expressed concerns regarding an export control license during discussions with Indian officials. According to Patel, the officials promptly focused on resolving the issue, and by the time the delegation departed, the problem had been addressed.
“This kind of entrepreneurial dynamism in the public sector is uncommon. We see it in India and the US; that quick responsiveness and scale are critical,” he observed.
Patel’s remarks come amidst global competition for AI talent and the development of domestic capabilities in emerging technologies.
He pointed out that the most significant challenge in the coming years may not be a deficiency of jobs, but rather a lack of workers skilled in AI.
“We’re going to face a shortage of those who are adept and proficient in AI,” Patel noted.
He mentioned that the productivity divide between those comfortable with AI tools and those who aren’t could be considerable, making AI literacy a vital competency.
While recognizing that some jobs might be at risk during this transition, Patel argued that entirely new industries and opportunities will arise. He maintained that major advancements in technology have historically led to new challenges, generating demand for fresh skills and a larger workforce.
Cisco is actively expanding initiatives aimed at preparing the workforce for these shifts. Patel stated that the company collaborates with governments around the globe, reaching millions through its Networking Academy platform. They have also introduced AI and cybersecurity courses to help individuals adapt to evolving job market demands.
“It’s crucial to ensure that no one gets left behind,” he stressed. “We partner with governments worldwide and assist tens of millions in enhancing their skills.”
Patel affirmed that India’s demographic characteristics, expanding talent pool, and growing focus on digital skills could strategically position the nation as AI adoption accelerates across various sectors.
