The incident was also corroborated by Qatar’s interior ministry, which linked it to a technical malfunction during factory operations.
Several injuries have been reported according to the ministry, but no leaks or threats to public safety have been identified. “The competent authorities are continuing to respond to the incident,” stated the Ministry’s announcement on “X”.
Why is Ras Laffan Important?
Ras Laffan manages around 77 to 80 million tonnes annually of LNG exports, accounting for nearly 20% of global LNG trade, with primary supply routes to Asia and Europe. Any disruption in this area directly affects global gas availability. The facility is also crucial because it produces LNG, along with products like urea, polymers, methanol, and aluminum.
The region was a significant target during the peak of the US-Iran war that began earlier this year, prompting QatarEnergy to declare force majeure on several LNG contracts.
Reuters reported on May 25 that the force majeure has now been extended until mid-August.
Currently, the extent of the damage caused by the fire remains unclear.
Timing Of The Accident
The incident coincides with high-level delegation discussions between the US and Iran in Switzerland, facilitated by mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.
During these talks, US President Donald Trump threatened to escalate attacks on Iran if an agreement was not reached, prompting the Iranian delegation to file a formal complaint, according to state television.
