This defeat means India has more work ahead in their remaining group-stage games, although they remain second in the standings behind unbeaten Australia.
Marizanne Kapp led the charge for South Africa, scoring an unbeaten 81 off 45 balls after receiving two lifelines in the field. Radha Yadav let both chances slip at long-on, giving Kapp the opportunity to dictate the game and steer her team to victory.
“We had a couple of opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them,” Harmanpreet reflected post-match.
“Shree Charani and Shafali bowled well, but our fielders didn’t back them up. Taking chances is essential at this level.”
Kapp’s performance was ultimately pivotal, as the South African all-rounder made the most of the missed chances to lead her team to a comfortable win.
“She took the game away from us. We provided her two chances, which turned out to be critical moments that shifted the game in their favor,” Harmanpreet added.
This match was also a personal achievement for the Indian captain, marking her as the first cricketer, regardless of gender, to play 200 T20 internationals.
Looking forward, Harmanpreet mentioned that India would reevaluate their strategy before their important matches against Bangladesh and Australia as they aim for a semi-final spot.
“With two matches left, it’s a crucial time to rethink our approach. We will discuss what needs to change,” she stated.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, and India still has a strong chance despite this setback.
“There are plenty of lessons, numerous positive moments, and times when I need to remain resilient. Now is the moment to stay hopeful and strategize for our upcoming games,” Harmanpreet said.
The Indian women’s team will face Bangladesh in their next match on June 25.
