In an exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18, Hart shared that interest in AI education has dramatically risen over the past year as both companies and individuals strive to develop new skills.
“Last year, we had approximately 15 enrolments per minute in AI content. Currently, we’ve escalated to 20 enrolments per minute on Coursera. That’s one every three seconds,” Hart explained.
Hart emphasized that the growth of generative AI has made ongoing education crucial for employees and businesses alike.
“In this age of AI, it’s essential for everyone to enhance their skills because AI is transforming possibilities so swiftly that failing to upskill and reskill could result in being left behind,” he stated.
He mentioned that the demand for AI-focused learning is coming from both individual users and organizations. Companies are increasingly desiring targeted, role-specific AI training instead of general awareness programs.
“When we collaborate with enterprises, we first identify their objectives and then work alongside them to devise the right strategy for targeted upskilling and reskilling tailored to their specific functions,” he noted.
According to the Coursera chief, the company anticipates that content created by experts and certified assessments will gain even greater importance in a time when AI tools can easily produce content.
“Coursera offers not just a collection of that content, but a deep academic and educational perspective on delivering learning that ensures verified assessment and proof of understanding,” he explained.
Hart also mentioned that the company is incorporating AI tools into learning experiences and workflows. Coursera already integrates with ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Anthropic’s Claude.
“Our primary focus is on skills, their delivery, assessment, and providing authentic proof of skill mastery. We believe this will differentiate us in the market,” he remarked.
He also announced that Coursera and Udemy, which recently merged, are working towards a cohesive platform.
“Our objective is to transition to a single integrated platform,” he stated. “This new platform will differ significantly from either Coursera or Udemy as we know them today. AI will be an integral aspect.”
Hart explained that AI-driven learning experiences embedded within work processes will define the future of education and lead to improved results for learners.
