During a discussion about bilateral security collaboration with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump stated that the United States would support India in the event of an attack.
“I believe it is a wonderful relationship… We may lack a formal contract… but if they were attacked, we would be there to assist them,” he remarked.
Citing PM Modi, Trump expressed that the U.S. would back India under his guidance, humorously adding that the scenario might change with a future leader.
“If anyone attacks that man, we will be there. Now, if there’s a new leader, I’m unsure,” he stated. “If they are attacked and he (PM Modi) is at the helm, we will be there to assist,” Trump elaborated.
Trump also commended Modi for his efforts in enhancing economic relations between the two countries, emphasizing India’s investments in the United States.
Highlighting the magnitude of Indian business activities in the U.S. market, Trump said, “Prime Minister Modi is constructing a lot in the United States. He is investing significantly in the U.S.”

The two leaders last convened in person at the White House in February 2025, shortly following Trump’s second inauguration. However, relations later faced difficulties due to the US President’s decision to levy tariffs on India and his subsequent claim of having facilitated the resolution of the India-Pakistan conflict post-Operation Sindoor.
Both leaders are currently in France for the G7 Summit, taking place from June 15 to 17.
