UP Governor and Chancellor of state universities Anandiben Patel has instructed all medical, dental, and other higher education institutions in the state to set up dedicated units to prevent alleged religious conversions through “inducement or mental pressure,” officials reported on Thursday.

This directive came in response to reports of alleged conversion-related incidents associated with King George’s Medical University (KGMU) and Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow.

Consequently, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University has requested all its affiliated colleges to prioritize the implementation of these directives by June 6.
In a letter released by the Governor’s Secretariat on May 28, institutions were urged to foster a “safe, secular, and academic environment” and to stay alert against such activities.

The letter emphasized that educational institutions serve as “not only centers of knowledge and innovation but also the foundation for the moral, intellectual, and social development of youth,” insisting that campuses should remain places of “academic excellence, intellectual freedom, and harmony.”

The Governor’s office instructed institutions to activate anti-radicalization or student welfare cells, enhance counseling services, monitor hostels and sensitive zones, and restrict the entry of unauthorized individuals.

It also noted that any attempt to sway students through “fear, mental pressure, or unethical inducement” for illegal or forced conversion is “unacceptable and contrary to the law.”

Institutions have been directed to conduct awareness programs and promptly notify police and local authorities if any suspicious activities are detected.

The medical university has urged all affiliated colleges to take swift action and deliver compliance reports.
