Embraer CEO: KC390 Ideal for India, Assured of Securing IAF Contract
Brazilian aerospace company Embraer is optimistic about winning India’s medium military transport aircraft competition, presenting its C-390 Millennium as a contemporary and cost-efficient alternative for the Indian Air Force.

In an exclusive interview with CNBC-TV18, Embraer President and CEO Francisco Gomes Neto stated that the company is collaborating closely with its Indian partner, Mahindra, to enhance its proposal for the program.

Through its partnership with Mahindra, Embraer has suggested assembling the C-390 in India if awarded the contract by the Indian Air Force, aligning with the government’s Make in India initiative.
“We are very confident. We understand it’s a challenging process. It’s not a done deal,” Gomes Neto remarked.

“We have a strong ally in India, Mahindra. We already have a team and an office in Delhi, and we are all dedicated to crafting the best offer for the Indian Air Force.”

This opportunity is viewed as one of the most significant within the military aviation sector in India, as the nation aims to upgrade and expand its medium transport aircraft fleet, which includes recent orders for the Airbus C295, Lockheed Martin C130 J, and An-32.

Gomes Neto described the Embraer C-390 as the leading aircraft in its class, emphasizing its cutting-edge design and operational versatility.

“The KC-390 stands out as the best-in-class military aircraft for medium transport,” he asserted.

According to Embraer, the aircraft’s jet-powered configuration, fly-by-wire controls, and multi-mission capabilities afford it a competitive edge over other platforms.

“It is designed for multiple missions. Transitioning between missions can take just a few hours, whereas other aircraft may require days for such changes,” Gomes Neto noted.

Lower maintenance and operating costs

A critical aspect of Embraer’s proposal to India is the aircraft’s reduced lifecycle costs.

“The KC-390 incorporates a commercial essence,” Gomes Neto stated.

“It is a military aircraft designed for high usage. Consequently, the operational and maintenance expenses are significantly lower than those of its competitors.”
he added.

Local assembly with Mahindra

Gomes Neto emphasized that localization, pricing, and industrial partnerships will play crucial roles in the competition, alongside the technical capabilities of the aircraft.

“While the aircraft itself is vital, factors such as localization and pricing are equally important,” he mentioned.

Currently, there are 14 KC-390s operational, with 8 in Brazil, 4 in Portugal, and 2 in Hungary.

The company has been broadening its defense presence globally and recently secured a major order from the UAE for 10 firm KC-390 aircraft, with options for 10 additional units.

The aircraft is gaining significant traction in the international military transport market, with Embraer achieving over 60 firm orders and 29 options. Countries such as Portugal, Hungary, South Korea, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and the UAE have opted for the aircraft, reflecting growing confidence in its capabilities.

Although geopolitical tensions have introduced uncertainties in commercial aviation due to rising fuel prices, Gomes Neto noted that they have simultaneously accelerated defense procurement initiatives worldwide.

“The conflict raises concerns for civil aviation, especially regarding fuel price increases. However, it also presents opportunities in defense,” he explained.

For Embraer, India continues to be a crucial market as it explores military and commercial aviation prospects in the region.
