Sixty percent of Indian travelers are considering domestic vacations, while 85% are inclined to purchase travel insurance, indicating a shift towards more cautious and financially prepared travel choices, as per the Allianz Partners Global Travel Confidence Index 2026 conducted with Ipsos.

The report reveals that India remains one of the most travel-enthusiastic nations globally, with 87% of participants intending to travel this summer, significantly higher than the global average of 74%.

Nonetheless, escalating costs, uncertainty, and heightened risk awareness are influencing how trips are organized and funded.
Domestic travel takes precedence

India stands out globally in domestic travel preferences, with 60% of travelers opting for vacations within the country, compared to a global average of 42%. This trend indicates increasing cost sensitivity and a tendency towards shorter, value-driven trips.

Insurance becomes a crucial travel investment

Travel insurance is becoming an essential component of travel budgets, with 85% of Indian travelers likely to secure coverage for future trips. The report highlights that protection against medical emergencies, cancellations, and disruptions significantly influences this decision, along with the desire for peace of mind.

Costs and risks redefine travel choices

Financial constraints are a prominent concern, with 76% of travelers cutting back on non-essential expenses to accommodate travel, and 72% scaling back their vacation plans due to increased costs. Meanwhile, 82% anticipate further hikes in travel expenses.

Simultaneously, 83% state that geopolitical uncertainty impacts their choice of destinations, while 84% express concerns about extreme weather and environmental hazards.

Digital and experience-focused travel on the rise

The research also underscores the growing adoption of AI in travel planning, with 82% of respondents currently using or intending to use digital tools. Experience-driven travel is gain traction as well, with many travelers prioritizing concerts, festivals, sports events, and wellness trips.
