Fully Prepared for India: Sangakkara Praises Sooryavanshi's Impressive IPL Achievement
Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara is confident that teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is fully prepared to transition to international cricket after a stunning IPL 2026 season highlighted by another thrilling performance.

The 15-year-old showcased his talent with a spectacular 96 off 47 deliveries, hitting eight fours and seven sixes during the second qualifier against the Gujarat Titans on Friday. Unfortunately, this incredible effort wasn’t enough to secure Rajasthan’s place in the tournament, leading to their exit with a seven-wicket loss.

Despite the defeat, Sooryavanshi became one of the season’s standout players. He concluded the IPL as the leading run-scorer, amassing 776 runs across 16 matches and eclipsing Chris Gayle’s long-held record for the most sixes in a single season.
Commenting on the teenager’s remarkable ascent, Sangakkara noted that Sooryavanshi has demonstrated he is “more than ready” to take on the challenge of representing India at the highest level.

“At just 15 years old, he exhibits remarkable maturity, has an excellent understanding of the game, reads situations adeptly, and plays without fear,” Sangakkara mentioned to reporters post-match.

“We are extremely proud of the season he’s had, and we aim to ensure that he continues to push forward, maintaining that fearless mindset and growth. I believe he will only get better with time.”

Sooryavanshi’s stellar performances have earned him a spot in the developmental India A squad, with many anticipating his inclusion in the senior Twenty20 International team.

When asked if he thought Sooryavanshi was ready to play for India, Sangakkara responded: “You can never really tell if someone is ready until they take the field.”

“Given everything Vaibhav has demonstrated against some of the world’s best bowlers, I believe he is more than capable of handling any challenge thrown his way.”

“I have no doubt he will receive that call-up very soon. He has returned with great maturity and has effectively led the opening partnership for us this season.”

Following their victory over Rajasthan, Gujarat will face the reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL final on Sunday in Ahmedabad.
