These reports, from CBS and Axios, surfaced shortly after US President Donald Trump announced he would not attend his son’s wedding this weekend due to “government circumstances” and his “commitment to the United States of America.”
Trump emphasized that it was “essential for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this significant time.”
Both Axios and CBS noted that a final decision regarding new strikes has not yet been reached.
Discussions remain active, with Pakistan—acting as a mediator between the US and Iran—dispatching its military chief to Tehran in hopes of finalizing a deal.
The White House refrained from commenting when AFP sought clarification on the reports.
According to CBS, a spokesperson from the White House, Anna Kelly, mentioned that “the President has been clear about the consequences if Iran fails to reach an agreement.”
Earlier on Friday, the White House revealed a shift in Trump’s weekend itinerary, stating he would stay in the US capital instead of traveling to his golf resort in New Jersey as initially planned.
Upon returning from a speech in New York state on Friday, Trump did not take questions from accompanying reporters, which is unusual for him.
Axios cited two unnamed sources reporting that Trump has become “increasingly frustrated with the negotiations concerning Iran in recent days.”
Axios also mentioned that Trump’s stance shifted this week from supporting diplomacy to contemplating a strike.
According to CBS, citing unnamed sources, members of the US military and intelligence services are cancelling their holiday weekend plans in preparation for potential strikes.
