Unacademy co-founder and CEO of the test preparation business, Sumit Jain, to resign prior to UpGrad merger, according to reports.
Sumit Jain, the CEO of Unacademy’s test-preparation division based in Bengaluru, is resigning from his full-time operational role, as reported by Moneycontrol.

Jain is also one of the company’s co-founders.

This decision comes prior to the company’s proposed merger with upGrad. An internal memo from Unacademy co-founder and CEO Gaurav Munjal was cited by Moneycontrol.
According to the report, Munjal mentioned that Jain’s final day in a full-time operational role will be June 30, after which he will serve the company in an advisory capacity.

The memo from Munjal stated, “Sumit has been a strong support system and a Co-Founder for Unacademy since 2020. I have personally known him since 2013, when CommonFloor acquired my first company, Flatchat. More importantly, he has been a dear friend.”

“Sumit has established two strong pillars for Unacademy. The first is Graphy, which has become a growing, profitable business for us. His acquisition of Spayee and the subsequent merger with Graphy significantly benefited Unacademy Group. Additionally, he helped make our Offline Business profitable through a focus on Unit Economics and successfully transitioning them to Franchisees,” he wrote.

Jain joined Unacademy in 2020 following the firm’s acquisition of his startup, OpenTalk. Prior to this, he was the CEO and co-founder of CommonFloor, a real estate platform that Quikr later acquired.

In September 2025, Jain was promoted to CEO of Unacademy’s test-preparation division.

This change comes as Unacademy is set to merge with Ronnie Screwvala-led UpGrad, which has filed a merger proposal with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to acquire Unacademy.

The anticipated merger is expected to enhance UpGrad’s presence in the online test-preparation sector, covering categories such as UPSC, JEE, NEET, and GATE. With regulatory approvals, the merger is projected to finalize by the end of June.
