Abu Dhabi Selects Yas Island as the First International Sphere Venue: Full Details Inside
Abu Dhabi has officially chosen Yas Island as the site for its upcoming Sphere entertainment venue, marking significant progress for the high-profile project first announced last year. This immersive arena, developed in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment, will be the first Sphere venue established outside the United States.

The project will be situated between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. This area is already home to attractions such as Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, major hotels, and the Yas Marina Circuit, with Zayed International Airport located just a short drive away.

Authorities estimate the construction cost to be approximately $1.7 billion, targeting completion by the end of 2029, according to Arabian Business.
Once operational, Sphere Abu Dhabi is anticipated to accommodate up to 20,000 guests, varying by the type and format of the events held.

Officials noted that the venue will be part of a larger infrastructure expansion initiative involving various government and semi-government entities, including Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Department of Energy, TAQA, Etihad Rail, and Aldar.

Proposed enhancements include road improvements, utility developments, and improved access to the site, all aimed at managing the heavy influx of visitors to Yas Island during concerts, Formula 1 weekends, busy retail times, and holiday seasons.

This development aligns with Abu Dhabi’s ongoing tourism growth, as the report indicated that the emirate welcomed 26.6 million visitors in 2025, while hotel revenues reached AED 9.1 billion. Hotel occupancy rates also peaked at 81% that year.

Sphere Abu Dhabi was first revealed in October 2024, when plans for the second Sphere venue globally were disclosed. The partnership advanced significantly in July 2025 after DCT Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment finalized agreements concerning franchise rights, development, and pre-opening services.

Under the project structure, DCT Abu Dhabi will cover construction costs, while Sphere Entertainment will contribute technology, proprietary designs, intellectual property, and essential support services for the endeavor.

The venue is set to host three primary categories of events: immersive Sphere Experiences, concert residencies, and large-scale events, such as combat sports, conferences, and product launches.

Additionally, plans include programming emphasizing Emirati culture and providing opportunities for local artists to display their work on the Exosphere, which is the venue’s expansive external LED display system.

Regulatory documents also indicate that DCT Abu Dhabi will pay franchise-related fees based on construction milestones, followed by quarterly royalty payments once the venue opens. The agreement grants Abu Dhabi exclusive rights to develop and manage Sphere venues throughout the Middle East and North Africa for a minimum of 10 years post the Abu Dhabi launch.
