Indian Railways to Launch Enhanced Reservation System Starting in August: Everything You Need to Know
Indian Railways is poised to initiate one of its largest upgrades in decades by replacing its 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a new high-capacity platform starting August 2026. This modernization effort is designed to enhance ticket booking, making it quicker, smoother, and more reliable for millions of passengers nationwide.

Since its inception in 1986, the current reservation system has been integral to railway ticketing for nearly four decades. Given the substantial increase in online bookings and passenger demand, railway officials feel the aging infrastructure has reached its operational limits.

At a review meeting conducted at Rail Bhavan, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructed officials to implement the upgrade without inconveniencing passengers. Ministers of State for Railways V Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu were also present during these discussions.
“Started in 1986, this system has experienced several minor updates over the past 40 years. However, it has now undergone a complete overhaul, with its capacity significantly enhanced through cutting-edge technology,” stated the Ministry of Railways.

The new reservation platform is set to greatly enhance booking speed, system reliability, and overall scalability. This upgrade arrives at a time when nearly 88% of railway ticket bookings are conducted online.

Indian Railways has been progressively expanding its digital services over the years. The online booking portal, which debuted in 2002, revolutionized railway ticketing in India, and the recent launch of the RailOne super app has further optimized passenger services. The app employs Artificial Intelligence to forecast waitlist confirmation odds, reportedly boosting prediction accuracy from 53% to 94%.

The RailOne app has already gained immense popularity, achieving over 3.16 crore downloads on Android and more than 33 lakh downloads on iOS. Beyond ticket booking and cancellations, passengers can utilize the platform to check live train statuses, coach positions, platform information, and access grievance support through Rail Madad.

While travelers might not observe significant changes in their day-to-day bookings at first, the upgraded system is anticipated to provide a more seamless booking experience, particularly during festivals and peak travel times.

This overhaul is also expected to enhance waitlist predictions, bolster system capacity to accommodate increasing passenger traffic, and better unify railway services within a single app.

Passengers are encouraged to keep using IRCTC for their bookings and ensure the RailOne app remains updated throughout the transition period. Although the migration process is expected to commence in August 2026, the Railways has yet to reveal a definitive timeline for the full implementation of the upgraded reservation platform.

For millions across the nation, Indian Railways continues to be the foundation of economical travel. In the fiscal year 2024–25, the Railways allocated a passenger subsidy of ₹60,239 crore.

Official figures indicate that passengers effectively received an average concession of about 43% on ticket prices. “In simpler terms, if providing the service costs ₹100, the ticket price is only ₹57,” the ministry added.
