Sports Ministry Confirms Ongoing Ban on Bilateral Competitions with Pakistan, Exempting Multinational Events
The Sports Ministry announced on Wednesday that the existing blanket ban on bilateral sports relations with Pakistan, imposed last year, will continue. However, athletes from Pakistan will not be prohibited from participating in multi-lateral events in India.

The ministry affirmed its dedication to streamlining the visa application process for athletes, team officials, technical staff, and representatives of International Sports Governing Bodies, aiming to establish India as a “preferred sporting destination”.

“In terms of bilateral sports events in each other’s countries, Indian teams will not take part in competitions held in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be allowed to compete in India,” the ministry stated in a circular distributed to all National Sports Federations (NSFs), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and the Sports Authority of India (SAI), among others.
“Regarding international and multilateral events, whether in India or abroad, we will adhere to the practices of global sports organizations and prioritize the interests of our own athletes.
“Therefore, Indian teams and individual athletes will participate in international events that include teams or athletes from Pakistan. Likewise, Pakistani teams and players will be allowed to compete in such multilateral events organized in India,” it added.

This policy was first introduced in August of last year following significant controversy regarding India’s participation in cricket’s Asia Cup in the UAE, which also included Pakistan, just months after the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in 26 fatalities.

At that time, the Ministry clarified that it would not hinder multi-lateral cricket engagements unless Pakistan was the host country.

This policy emphasizes that India, which aims to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games, will adhere to the Olympic Charter and its principle of inclusivity to position itself as a welcoming host for global events.

“To establish India as a preferred venue for international sporting events, the visa process for athletes, team officials, technical staff, and representatives of International Sports Governing Bodies will be simplified,” stated the ministry.

“For representatives of International Sports Governing Bodies, a multi-entry visa will be granted on a priority basis for the duration of their official tenure, up to a maximum of five years.”
