FedEx and IIT Madras Achieve India's First Intra-City Drone Delivery, Reducing Time from 60 to 21 Minutes
Federal Express Corporation, commonly referred to as FedEx, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), announced on Tuesday the successful completion of India’s inaugural intra-city drone delivery flight trials in Bengaluru, signifying progress in urban logistics innovation.

The express transportation service stated that the trials confirmed a mid-mile drone logistics connection between Electronic City Phase II and a location near Bangalore International Airport Limited.

The trials were conducted under the FedEx SMART Centre at IIT Madras, focusing on high-speed drone operations within urban airspace. They also evaluated the potential to enhance network efficiency and decrease dependence on road transportation.
Analysis from the FedEx SMART Centre indicated that a 53 km road route, typically taking over 60 minutes, can be supplanted by an aerial route of about 39–42 km. This significantly reduced one-way transit time to approximately 21 minutes during the trials.

Nitin Navneet Tatiwala, vice president of marketing, customer experience, and air network (MEISA) at FedEx, remarked, “This achievement exemplifies the FedEx SMART Centre’s extensive research agenda focused on air cargo optimisation, electric vehicle integration, and advanced demand forecasting.”

The drones successfully navigated Airport Yellow and Red Zones with endorsements from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. This initiative is part of FedEx’s worldwide efforts to establish safe and scalable logistics solutions.

Prof. Satyanarayanan R Chakravarthy, a core faculty member at the FedEx SMART Centre, IIT Madras, commented, “By incorporating advanced aerial robotics into urban logistics, we transcend theoretical research to demonstrate the effectiveness of impactful, future-ready solutions capable of transforming the global logistics landscape.”

Prof. Arshinder Kaur, the professor in-charge at the FedEx SMART Centre, added, “These high-speed drone delivery trials serve as a robust illustration of the centre’s dedication to fostering innovation across contemporary supply chains and expediting advanced technologies.”

FedEx offers global transportation, e-commerce, and business services, emphasizing technology and collaborative efforts. IIT Madras, founded in 1959 as an Institute of National Importance, encompasses 18 academic departments and several interdisciplinary research centres.
