Women’s Quota Legislation: Voting on Three Bills in Lok Sabha Scheduled for 4 PM This Friday

Parliament's Budget Session Expected to be Shortened, Possible Resumption After State Elections
Voting on the three bills aimed at amending the women’s quota law and establishing a delimitation commission is scheduled for 4 PM on Friday (April 17), as announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Birla indicated that there will be a debate lasting approximately 15-18 hours on the bills, with voting set for 4 PM on Friday.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju proposed a 12-hour debate on the legislation, noting that any decision to extend it would be at the Speaker’s discretion.
Previously, Union ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and Amit Shah introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha to amend the women’s quota law and create a delimitation commission, amidst protests from the opposition, which labeled the proposed legislations as anti-constitutional.

‘The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026’, ‘The Delimitation Bill, 2026’ and ‘The Union Territories Laws (Amendment Bill), 2026’ were presented in the House.

According to the proposed Constitutional amendment bill, the number of Lok Sabha seats would increase to a maximum of 850 from the current 543 to “operationalise” the women’s reservation law ahead of the 2029 parliamentary elections, following a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census.
