In a filing made on Wednesday (April 15) night in St. Louis federal court, Sam Altman argued that Missouri’s child sexual abuse statute does not permit punitive damages for Annie Altman’s claims, but rather restricts her to “damages for injury or illness” resulting from childhood sexual abuse.
Sam Altman stated that punitive damages are also not applicable for actions he is alleged to have committed during childhood. He reiterated his request to have Annie Altman’s lawsuit dismissed entirely.
Annie Altman’s attorneys did not immediately respond to inquiries for comment after business hours.
She has accused her brother of sexually abusing and raping her between 1997 and 2006 at their family home in suburban Clayton, Missouri, starting when she was three and he was 12. She claims the “last acts of sexual abuse and rape” occurred when Sam Altman had become an adult. He is currently 40 years old.

The Altman family has indicated that Annie Altman faces mental health challenges and has received financial support. Sam Altman claimed that she began making accusations against him on social media after they rejected her demands for “greater and greater financial support.”
Her lawsuit was initiated in January 2025.
In response, Sam Altman is countersuing his sister for defamation over her posts, including a video in which she alleged that “an almost tech billionaire” molested her.
He is seeking $1, stating that he “does not want to harm his sister financially” but desires a verdict declaring that her statements are untrue.
Sam Altman became a prominent figure in the AI boom following the release of the chatbot ChatGPT in 2022.
Additionally, he faces an upcoming trial on April 27 in a lawsuit from fellow billionaire Elon Musk, which claims OpenAI has strayed from its mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity and allegedly defrauded him into making donations. OpenAI partner Microsoft is also named as a defendant.
