Batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was spotted watching Bhinder as he was scrolling through the phone, which ignited considerable buzz on social media.
“We have requested the ACSU to investigate and provide a report on the incident,” IPL Governing Council Chair Arun Dhumal stated to The New Indian Express.
Using a mobile phone in the dugout contravenes the protocols of the Players and Match Officials Area.
The BCCI has acknowledged the situation, with secretary Devajit Saikia indicating that the accuracy of the event will be investigated by the board before reaching any “conclusion”.
“We must meticulously assess where the event took place and confirm whether the phone was indeed used. An internal inquiry will be conducted before coming to a logical conclusion. We will review the video footage and compile evidence before making a determination,” Saikia told PTI.
The incident’s footage was initially shared on Instagram by a social media influencer, confirming that Bhinder was using a mobile phone while teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi sat next to him during the Royals’ six-wicket victory in Guwahati on Friday.
“Yes, Bhinder has indeed violated the protocol of the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA) as cell phones are prohibited in the dugout during matches,” another BCCI official verified.
According to IPL’s official website, the relevant clause concerning PMOA protocol 2026 states: “The Team Manager may use a phone in the dressing room but NOT in the dugout.” Observers believe that Bhinder, who has been with the franchise since its inception, should have been fully aware of the anti-corruption protocols.
“While it may have been inadvertent, there must be some action since it constitutes a breach. Whether it results in a warning or a match ban will depend on the match referee and ACU report. The IPL GC can then make an informed decision,” a senior official commented.
Bhinder may face heightened scrutiny, particularly after Sooryavanshi referred to him as his “local guardian” during the post-match presentation.
