RK Singh, connected to LK Advani's arrest, becomes a Supreme Court advocate; pledges to uphold democracy.

Former Union minister and prominent leader RK Singh has embarked on a new journey as a lawyer in the Supreme Court. He previously played a significant role in the arrest of veteran BJP leader LK Advani and was subsequently expelled from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In a statement shared on X, Singh announced his formal membership in the Supreme Court bar.

“I have joined the Supreme Court Bar. I will advocate for the protection of our democracy and the rights of citizens,” he stated.

Singh is a retired IAS officer from the Bihar cadre, class of 1975. He was recognized for his strict and disciplined approach, particularly during his tenure as the district magistrate of Samastipur.

In the early 1990s, Advani, a founding member of the BJP, initiated a rath yatra from Somnath in Gujarat to rally support for the Ram Temple movement.

As the procession progressed into Bihar, concerns arose from then-Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav, who feared potential law and order issues and communal strife.

Yadav ordered the halt of the yatra and directed the arrest of Advani, who was serving as the deputy prime minister at the time. Following this directive, RK Singh executed the arrest.

Singh also held the position of home secretary during the Manmohan Singh administration, tackling significant national challenges such as internal security, Naxal violence, and terrorism. He was instrumental in enhancing the national security framework post the Mumbai 26/11 attacks.

He joined the BJP in 2013, successfully winning the Arrah Lok Sabha seat on two occasions (2014 and 2019), subsequently becoming an MP. In the Modi 1.0 government, he was appointed minister of power in 2017.

After a setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Arrah, he became openly critical of the BJP and its Bihar leadership.

He specifically called out Bihar BJP leaders Samrat Choudhary and Dilip Jaiswal, particularly following corruption allegations brought forward by political strategist Prashant Kishor, claiming they were damaging the party’s reputation, as reported by NDTV.

Consequently, he was suspended on grounds of anti-party activities.
