US Airlines Increase Checked Baggage Charges Due to Rising Fuel Prices
American Airlines and Alaska Air have raised checked baggage fees as airlines react to escalating jet fuel costs. American Airlines announced a $10 increase for the first and second checked bags for passengers on domestic and short-haul international flights, starting Thursday. Additionally, the cost of a third checked bag has been increased by $50, now totaling $200.

Alaska Air intends to increase checked baggage fees by $5 for the first bag and $10 for the second for passengers traveling on its North American routes, including those operated by its subsidiary, Hawaiian Airlines. The charge for a third checked bag has also been raised to $200. The airline confirmed that its loyalty programs remain unchanged, continuing to provide baggage benefits for intra-state travel within Hawaii and Alaska.

American Airlines further stated that there will be an additional $5 fee for checked bags for customers purchasing basic economy tickets starting May 18. On the same date, basic economy passengers will incur charges for seat selection and will be ineligible for complimentary system-wide upgrades. Passengers flying in premium cabins will still enjoy free baggage allowances on both domestic and international flights.
These fee adjustments are a response to airlines’ efforts to mitigate rising fuel expenses. Jet fuel prices, which were approximately $85 to $90 per barrel in February, have surged to around $209 per barrel worldwide, as reported by the International Air Transport Association.
