Upon their arrival, the team notified Delhi Police, after which a local police unit joined to assist with the proceedings, sources indicated.
This development follows a significant political confrontation as Sarma accused Congress of using “false information” from a Pakistani social media group to make claims about his wife’s multiple passports and overseas assets. He labeled these allegations as an attempt to sway the Assam elections and characterized it as a punishable offence.
Khera had recently requested clarifications regarding the alleged foreign assets of Sarma’s wife, prompting a complaint and subsequent police action.
In response, Congress senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh criticized the Assam government, describing the police actions as excessive and politically driven.
“The mobilization of a large contingent of police to detain my colleague Pawan Khera for merely asking fundamental questions in the public interest shows that the Assam CM is disturbed, desperate, and anxious,” Ramesh stated.
“This is not due process but rather a witch hunt, as a bully uses state machinery to suppress and silence the Opposition that is revealing his numerous transgressions. Those who resort to intimidation are the truly fearful and have much to conceal,” he continued.
Ramesh also asserted that this development suggests the chief minister is facing an “imminent defeat.”
